The Gap Youth and Community Centre is a grass roots organisation which was established in 1977 by the local Aboriginal Community. The organisation’s central goal is to provide a safe place for young Indigenous people and their families. Gap Youth has a high level of understanding of the youth context and a long history of delivering programs for young Aboriginal people in Alice Springs.
Over this time, Gap Youth has built a strong connection with and support within the Alice Springs community. Gap Youth’s experience providing youth services in Alice Springs enables us to deliver high quality, targeted, culturally appropriate services in collaboration with other local providers which is evident by the direct negotiations with NT Government to deliver after-hours services to young people.
For over forty years, Gap Youth has delivered after-hours services for young people in Alice Springs. Periodically, Gap Youth has also delivered recreational activities funded by the Northern Territory Government through Vibe Grants, Department of the Chief Minister and the Department of Sport and Recreation.
For the past eight years, Gap Youth has operated a case management service, Reconnect, for Indigenous youth aged 12-18 year old who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Over this time, this program has delivered consistent positive outcomes, including finding stable accommodation for young people and their families, re-engaging the young people with the education system, and referring youth to specialised rehabilitation, legal and family support services.
Gap Youth has delivered these services in partnership with local organisations such as North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency, Alice Springs Youth Accommodation and Support Services, Bush Mob, Mission Australia, Relationships Australia, Jesuit Social Services, Tangentyere Council, Drug and Alcohol Service Australia, Women's Safety Service of Central Australia, local schools and health services.
